A Ghana visa for a U.S. citizen takes as little as 5 hours or as long as several weeks, depending on the route you choose. The official Ghana eVisa portal lists three tiers: Standard is processed within 96 hours, Priority within 48 hours and Express within 5 hours. Applying through a Ghanaian embassy or consulate on paper is a much slower path, and for most travelers with a trip coming up, it is the wrong one.

This guide explains what each timeline actually means, what slows an application down, what it costs, and what to do if your departure date is already close.

TL;DR

  • The official Ghana eVisa has three tiers: Standard (96 hours, $260), Priority (48 hours, $338) and Express (5 hours, $442). The fee is the same for every nationality.
  • Those hours count processing, not preparation. Missing documents, a poor photo or a payment error can cost you more time than the tier saves.
  • Paper applications through an embassy or consulate can take weeks, so they suit travelers who are four or more weeks from departure.
  • A single-entry eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, so do not apply so early that it lapses before you fly.
  • If you leave in days and your documents are not ready, getting guided help early is cheaper than a missed flight.

The short answer: how long does a Ghana visa take?

For U.S. citizens, the answer depends on the channel.

Route Stated processing time Cost
Official eVisa, Standard Within 96 hours $260
Official eVisa, Priority Within 48 hours $338
Official eVisa, Express Within 5 hours $442
Pre-approved Visa on Arrival (Emergency Entry Visa) 3 to 5 working days, express 1 to 2 days Set by the Ghana Immigration Service
Embassy or consulate paper visa Varies by mission, often weeks Consular fee set by the mission

The eVisa figures come straight from the official applicant guide, which also confirms that the fee is a flat rate based on the processing speed you select, not on nationality. The Visa on Arrival timeline is from the Ghana Immigration Service guide.

The key point: these are processing windows once a complete application is in the system. They are not a promise that you will hold a visa within that many hours of deciding to travel.

How the eVisa tiers work

You pick a tier when you apply. According to the portal, the documents are the same for all three, so the only thing you buy with a higher tier is speed.

Standard: 96 hours

Standard is the right choice when you are at least a week out. Four days of processing leaves room for a request for corrections, a weekend, or a payment hiccup. At $260, it is also the cheapest of the three eVisa options.

Priority: 48 hours

Priority costs $338 and suits travelers about three to five days from departure whose documents are already assembled. If anything is missing, the extra $78 over Standard does not help, because the clock does not run on an incomplete file.

Express: 5 hours

Express costs $442 and is built for true last-minute cases: a business trip that appeared overnight, a family event, a rebooked flight. Treat it as a tool for a clean, complete application, not a rescue for a messy one.

What the eVisa gives you

The eVisa arrives digitally on approval, and the portal says you can show it on a device or in printed form at a Ghanaian port of entry. We recommend carrying a printed copy as well. A phone battery that dies at immigration is a problem you can avoid for the price of a sheet of paper.

The visa is also time limited. Reporting on the 2026 rules says single-entry eVisas are valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and you must enter within that window. If your trip is months away, wait.

What actually slows a Ghana visa down

Most delays are not government backlogs. They come from the application itself. Based on the published requirements, these are the common causes.

Incomplete proof of accommodation and funds

Tourist applicants are asked for proof of accommodation and financial sufficiency, such as three months of bank or card statements. A hotel booking without a confirmation, or a statement that covers only a few weeks, is the kind of gap that triggers a request for more information.

Business documents

Business applicants need corporate registration, tax clearance and an invitation letter from the Ghana side, per the same reporting. The invitation letter is the one most often delayed, because it depends on someone else. Ask your host for it before you start the application, not after.

Yellow fever certificate

All travelers must have a yellow fever certificate. If you have never been vaccinated, speak with a travel clinic or your doctor early, because that step does not compress the way an eVisa tier does.

Passport problems

An expired or nearly expired passport stops a visa application before it starts. If your passport needs renewing, that comes first, and it is a separate government timeline. Our guide to expedited passport processing times explains how long each option takes so you can plan both documents together.

Payment errors

The applicant guide says that if your payment is deducted but the application still shows as unpaid, you should contact support rather than paying again, and not attempt payment more than three times. After three failed attempts, it advises waiting 24 to 48 hours. That wait alone can erase the benefit of an Express tier, so use a card that works for international online payments and check it before you begin.

Official fees are also generally non-refundable, with exceptions for system errors or duplicate payments, according to the same guide. Check every field before you submit.

Fees and what you really pay

The government eVisa fee is the figure in the table above. If you apply through an embassy or honorary consulate instead, fees differ. For example, one U.S. honorary consulate’s 2025 application form assesses a US$65 processing fee per person, and the consular fee is separate. Always read the form of the specific office you plan to use.

Payment is made in U.S. dollars on the portal, so your card issuer may add a foreign transaction charge depending on how the transaction is processed. It helps to understand how foreign transaction fees work before you pay for the visa and again before you spend in Ghana.

Visa on Arrival: not a walk-up option

Many travelers read “Visa on Arrival” and assume they can simply show up in Accra. That is not how it works for most. The Ghana Immigration Service describes a formal Visa on Arrival, or Emergency Entry Visa, that requires prior approval. A host in Ghana submits the application and supporting documents to GIS headquarters in Accra, and processing takes 3 to 5 working days, with an express option of 1 to 2 days, subject to approval.

The immigration service’s visa page also notes that a traveler arriving without a visa may be granted an Emergency Entry Visa or Visa on Arrival, subject to conditions set by regulation and by the immigration officer. That is discretionary. Airlines also commonly check visa status before boarding in the U.S., so arriving at the check-in desk without an approved visa is a risk, not a plan. Our comparison of eVisa versus Visa on Arrival walks through the trade-offs in more detail.

Embassy and consulate visas: the slow lane

Traditional visas issued by Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad can cover single or multiple journeys for periods from six months to five years, according to the Ghana Immigration Service. That is the answer to the common question about a five-year visa: it exists on the traditional route, but it is a mission-issued visa, not an eVisa tier, and it is subject to the mission’s approval and processing.

The tradeoff is time. Travelers regularly report waits of several weeks, and mail round trips add days on both ends. Paper submissions also mean your passport leaves your hands, which matters if you have other trips planned. If you want the longer validity and you are a month or more from departure, the embassy route can make sense. If you leave sooner, the eVisa is the practical choice.

Which route fits your timeline

We match the channel to the days you have left. The same logic we use for passports applies to visas.

Three days or fewer, or a family emergency. Time is too short for any paper process. If your documents are in order, the Express eVisa tier is the only visa route that fits. If your passport is the problem, a regional passport agency appointment may be the only option, and the agency will typically ask for proof of imminent travel.

Two days to four weeks. This is where most urgent Ghana trips fall. The eVisa tiers cover the visa. If the passport also needs work, a courier service that hand-delivers applications is the faster path compared with mailing them. Our page on the expedited Ghana visa for U.S. travelers covers your options in this window.

Four weeks or more. You have breathing room. Standard eVisa, or the embassy route if you want a longer-validity visa, will work, and a routine post office passport application is realistic.

A worked example

Say you live in Louisville, you fly to Accra in 12 days, and you discover your passport expires in four months. Many countries require six months of validity, so check Ghana’s current requirement before you rely on that margin. Your sequence would be:

  1. Renew the passport first, using an expedited option, because the visa application needs a valid passport number.
  2. Gather bank statements, accommodation confirmation and your yellow fever certificate while the passport is in process.
  3. Apply for the eVisa as soon as the passport is in hand, choosing Standard or Priority depending on how many days remain.
  4. Print the approval and keep a digital copy.

The passport is the long pole. The visa, done right, is the short one. That is why we ask about your passport before anything else.

Perspective: what we see in urgent visa cases

We are a registered U.S. Department of State passport courier with more than 20 years of experience and drop-off offices in 24 cities, and the pattern in urgent travel is consistent. People rarely lose a trip because a government office was slow. They lose it because one small item was wrong or missing and they found out too late.

For Ghana, that means the tier you pick matters less than the file you submit. A complete application on Standard will beat an incomplete one on Express every time. Our advice is to build the document set first, confirm your passport validity second, and only then decide how much speed to buy.

We also see travelers in cities far from a regional passport agency, such as Tampa, Charlotte, Sacramento, Nashville and Louisville, assume that an in-person visit is the only fast option. For passports in the two-day to four-week window, a courier is usually the more practical route, and it spares you a long drive and a day off work.

For step-by-step visa requirements, read our guide to applying for a Ghana visa as a U.S. citizen. If you are comparing other destinations on the same trip, we also cover Nigeria for travelers who add a second West African stop.

If your visa is not ready before departure

First, check the status in your eVisa account and do not pay twice. If payment shows as deducted but the application is unpaid, contact the portal’s support instead of retrying. The guide limits attempts to three.

Second, if you are on Standard and the clock is running down, review whether an upgrade is possible for your situation by asking portal support, rather than starting a second application that could create a duplicate payment.

Third, contact your airline before departure day. Airlines need to know your visa status, and an approved eVisa on your phone may be accepted at check-in when a printed copy is unavailable, but confirm this with them directly.

Finally, if the trip is genuinely at risk, rebook or change your flight early. Change fees are usually lower days ahead than hours ahead.

FAQ

How long does a Ghana eVisa take for a U.S. citizen?

The official portal lists Standard at 96 hours, Priority at 48 hours and Express at 5 hours. These apply to a complete application. The fee depends on the speed you select, not your nationality.

Can I get a Ghana visa on arrival as a U.S. traveler?

Only with prior approval in most cases. A host in Ghana submits the request to the Ghana Immigration Service in Accra, and approval takes 3 to 5 working days, or 1 to 2 days on the express option. Arriving with nothing and hoping for an Emergency Entry Visa is discretionary and risky.

Can I get a five-year Ghana visa?

The Ghana Immigration Service says visas issued by its diplomatic missions can run from six months to five years. The eVisa is a single-entry document valid for 90 days from issue. If you want long validity, apply through a mission and allow several weeks.

What documents do I need for the fastest approval?

Tourists should have proof of accommodation, three months of bank or card statements, a valid passport and a yellow fever certificate. Business travelers also need corporate registration, tax clearance and an invitation letter. Having everything scanned before you open the application avoids most delays.
