There is no publicly guaranteed expedited Nigeria visa for U.S. citizens. Nigeria’s own consular guidance says travelers who need urgent service should ask the application center directly, and the standard issue time is up to 15 business days after biometrics. You can still shorten your wait. A complete file, a passport that meets Nigeria’s rules and an early appointment do more than any promise of “rush” service. This guide explains what is realistic, what to submit, and what to do when your flight is closer than the visa.
TL;DR
- Nigeria publishes no guaranteed rush option for U.S. passport holders. The standard window is up to 15 business days after biometric enrollment, though some pages cite 2 to 3 working days for tourist visas.
- The visa fee for U.S. passport holders is $160 and is non-refundable once you submit.
- Reports say the U.S. application-center arrangement changed in July 2026, so confirm today whether you file through an embassy, a consulate or the e-Visa portal.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months with a blank visa page. We can fix a passport problem fast; we cannot promise a Nigerian visa date.
- Flying in under two weeks? Start the visa file and the passport check on the same day.

Can Americans get a visa for Nigeria?
Yes. U.S. passport holders apply for Nigerian visas through the Nigeria Immigration website, then complete the in-person steps the embassy lists. The type of visa matters more than speed. Tourism visas cover leisure trips and visits to family. Business visas cover meetings and commercial activity, and each type has its own document list.
Pick the right type before you pay. The fee is non-refundable after submission, and a visa issued for the wrong purpose costs you the time you were trying to save.
How fast can a Nigeria visa really be issued?
The published numbers do not all agree, and that is worth understanding before you plan a flight around them.
| Source | What it states |
|---|---|
| Nigeria Consulate, New York | Tourist and business visas are issued within 15 business days after successful biometric enrollment |
| Nigerian Embassy, Washington DC | Tourist visa timeline of 2 to 3 working days from receipt of application |
| Nigeria Immigration Service, 2025 Service Level Agreement | 48-hour timelines for transit visas and certain business visas |
Read those carefully. The short timelines run from receipt of a complete application, not from the day you decide to travel. The 15-business-day figure runs from biometrics, and you cannot do biometrics until you have an appointment. The same service agreement also notes that exceptions are at the discretion of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service. That means an emergency adjustment is possible but never something you can count on.
Plan on the long end. If the visa arrives early, you gain a calm week. If you plan on the short end and it does not, you lose a non-refundable ticket.
Where U.S. travelers file right now
For years, U.S. applicants completed the online form and then attended a biometric appointment at an OIS Services center, the provider the embassy lists as authorized to accept applications and take biometrics in the United States. A news report says Nigeria suspended OIS Services in July 2026 and that applicants must now file through the embassy in Washington, D.C., or the consulates in New York and Atlanta, while the e-Visa platform is unaffected.
Procedures like this can change again. Before you pay for anything, open the embassy’s visa page and the consulate nearest you, and confirm three things: where biometrics happen, whether an appointment is required, and whether you are eligible for the e-Visa. Anyone who offers a guaranteed date for a Nigerian visa without pointing to one of those official pages deserves a second look.
What you need to submit
A tourist visa file, as the Nigerian embassy lists it, includes:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months
- The completed online application form, with payment and acknowledgment confirmations
- Two passport photos
- A host invitation and a copy of the host’s passport data page, or a hotel booking if you are not staying with a host
- A return ticket
- Proof of funds
The full list sits on the embassy’s visa page. Business applicants add an invitation from a Nigerian host company and a letter from their own employer. If you are traveling to work under a temporary work permit, the embassy says your name must appear on an approval cable.
Most delays come from a mismatch in this file: a host name spelled differently from the invitation, a hotel booking that does not cover the dates, or a photo that fails the specification. Check each document against the passport itself, letter by letter, before you submit.
The fee
The current visa fee for U.S. passport holders is $160, and it is not refunded once you submit. Any extra charge from a third party for “rush” handling is a separate decision. Ask what exactly it buys, whether it changes the government’s timeline, and who is accountable if the visa arrives after your departure.
Your passport can sink the trip first
This is where we can help most. Nigeria requires a passport valid for at least 6 months and with a blank visa page. A passport that expires in five months, is damaged, or is lost cannot carry the visa at all. Discovering that on day 10 of a 14-day countdown is the situation we see most often.
The U.S. Department of State offers expedited service for U.S. passports, and the right route depends on how many days remain.
| Days until you fly | Route that fits |
|---|---|
| 3 days or fewer, or a family emergency | Regional passport agency, in person, by appointment |
| 2 days to 4 weeks | Courier expediting service |
| 4+ weeks | Routine or expedited mail-in through the post office |
If you live more than a couple of hours from a regional agency, in places like Tampa, Charlotte, Sacramento, Nashville or Louisville, the middle row is usually your practical answer. Our guide to using a courier to expedite a passport between 2 and 28 days out explains exactly what that involves.
Promo: fix the passport while the visa file moves
Fast Passport Center is a registered U.S. Department of State courier. We handle renewals, new passports, replacements for lost, stolen or damaged books, child passports and name changes, with agent review of your forms, real-time order tracking and in-person drop-off or secure shipping. Government fees are paid separately, and our service fees are shown at checkout. If your passport is the weak link, start with our urgent passport service, or use the emergency passport service when departure is days away. You can also see every passport service in one place.
We do not set Nigeria’s visa timeline and we do not claim to. What we can do is make sure the passport you hand the Nigerian authorities is valid, undamaged and in your hands in time.
A 14-day plan when you are short on time
Here is how we would sequence two weeks, in the order that protects you most.

Day 1. Check your passport’s expiration date. Count six months from your return date, not your departure date, to be safe. If it falls short, or the book is damaged, order the passport fix the same day.
Day 1 to 2. Open the Nigerian embassy’s visa page and confirm your filing route. Start the online form. Collect the invitation, photos, itinerary and proof of funds.
Day 2 to 4. Book the earliest biometric or filing slot available, even if it means traveling to Washington, New York or Atlanta. A longer trip for an earlier slot is often the cheaper trade.
Day 5 onward. Track both files. Your passport will need to be in hand when the visa is placed in it, so coordinate the two so they do not cross in the mail.
Our page on fast U.S. passport and visa routes when you fly in 14 days goes deeper on that sequencing.
What if the visa will not arrive before you fly?
You have three honest options, and none involves a trick.
Contact the issuing office and explain. The service agreement leaves room for exceptions, and emergencies such as a funeral or a medical situation are the cases that tend to be considered. Bring documents that prove the urgency, such as a letter from a hospital or a death notice. Do not expect an exception for a wedding or a holiday.
Check e-Visa eligibility. Nigeria runs an e-Visa platform that, according to reporting, was not affected by the July 2026 change. If your trip qualifies, it can be a different timeline from an embassy filing. For a sense of how e-Visas and visas on arrival compare in general, see our guide to eVisa versus visa on arrival. Verify eligibility on Nigeria’s official portal first, because not every traveler or trip type qualifies.
Move the flight. A change fee is almost always smaller than a lost ticket, a missed ceremony and a visa that arrives the day after you leave. If you are traveling through another country with its own entry rules, handle that leg separately. For a UK stop, for example, an urgent UK visa service deals with that country’s rules on its own timeline.

Our perspective
After more than 20 years of helping travelers who are out of time, we see the same pattern. People spend their first week on the thing they can see, the visa, and discover the passport problem when it is nearly too late. The visa is a government decision on a government clock. The passport is a problem you can solve with a courier in days, so we tell travelers to solve that first and in parallel.
We also think a rush service should say what it controls. We control how quickly your passport application reaches the agency and how carefully the forms are checked. We do not control a foreign consulate’s decision. Be wary of anyone who blurs that line, because the cost of the blur lands on you.
If your timeline is under four weeks and you are not near a regional agency, a courier is usually the right fit. If you are within three days, or facing a family emergency, go to an agency in person.

FAQ
Can Americans get a visa for Nigeria?
Yes. U.S. passport holders apply through the Nigeria Immigration website and then complete the filing or biometric step the embassy specifies. The fee is $160 and is non-refundable once you submit.
Can you get an expedited Nigeria visa?
Not as a standard, publicly guaranteed product. Nigerian consular guidance says urgent requests should be directed to the application center, and exceptions to processing standards remain at the discretion of Nigeria’s immigration chief. Plan for the standard timeline and treat anything faster as a bonus.
How long does a Nigeria visa take?
One consulate states up to 15 business days after biometrics, while the Washington embassy lists 2 to 3 working days for tourist visas from receipt of application. Because the figures differ, confirm the current timeline with the office handling your file before you buy a ticket.
Does my passport need to be valid for six months?
Yes. The embassy requires at least 6 months of validity and a blank visa page. If yours falls short, a courier expediting service can renew it within the 2-day to 4-week window, which keeps your visa file from stalling.
