New U.S. Citizen? First Passport Guide

A complete guide for new U.S. citizens getting their first passport. Learn what documents you need, how the DS-11 process works, and how Fast Passport Center's courier service speeds up passport delivery — not the citizenship process.

Important: Courier services help you get a passport fast — they do not help with gaining citizenship. You must be a U.S. citizen first.

Critical Distinction

Citizenship and a Passport Are Two Separate Things

This is one of the most common points of confusion we see — especially from parents who are U.S. citizens with children born outside the U.S. Here's what you need to understand before you call us.

U.S. Citizenship

Citizenship is a legal status granted by the U.S. government. It must be obtained before you can apply for a U.S. passport. Citizenship is handled by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) — not passport agencies, and not courier companies.

  • Granted at birth (if born in the U.S.)
  • Granted at birth abroad (if parents meet INA requirements)
  • Obtained through naturalization (USCIS process, Form N-400)
  • Evidenced by birth certificate, Certificate of Citizenship, CRBA, or Naturalization Certificate

U.S. Passport

A passport is a travel document issued by the U.S. State Department to people who are already U.S. citizens. You apply for it at a passport acceptance facility or agency using Form DS-11. Fast Passport Center can dramatically speed up how fast you receive it — but only after citizenship is confirmed.

  • Requires proof of U.S. citizenship (birth cert, CRBA, naturalization cert, etc.)
  • Issued by the U.S. Department of State
  • Applied for using Form DS-11 (new applicants)
  • Courier services like Fast Passport Center can get it to you in 2–3 business days

"My child was born in Canada — I'm a U.S. citizen. Can I get them a U.S. passport through you?"

This is a situation we see regularly, and the answer is: it depends on whether your child is already a U.S. citizen. The courier process only handles the passport step — citizenship must be established first. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Determine if your child qualifies for U.S. citizenship

A child born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent may automatically acquire U.S. citizenship at birth — but this depends on specific rules under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The key factors include: how long the U.S. citizen parent lived in the U.S. before the child's birth, whether one or both parents are U.S. citizens, and the child's birth date (the law has changed over the years). If the child does not automatically acquire citizenship at birth, the parent may need to file Form N-600 (Certificate of Citizenship) or in some cases pursue naturalization through USCIS.

Step 2: Obtain proof of citizenship

If your child acquired U.S. citizenship at birth abroad, you'll need a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA, Form FS-240) — issued by a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where the child was born. This document is the equivalent of a U.S. birth certificate for children born abroad. You cannot skip this step and go straight to a passport. If the child is a Canadian citizen with no citizenship documentation, citizenship must be established through USCIS before any passport application can be filed.

Step 3: Then apply for the passport — that's where we come in

Once citizenship is confirmed and documented (CRBA, Certificate of Citizenship, or U.S. birth certificate), the child can apply for a U.S. passport using Form DS-11. At that point, Fast Passport Center can handle the courier submission and get the passport in 2–3 business days. But we cannot do anything until Step 2 is complete.

The Bottom Line

A courier service speeds up the passport step of the process. It does not expedite gaining citizenship, obtaining a CRBA, or filing with USCIS. If you're not sure whether your child or family member is a U.S. citizen yet, contact USCIS at uscis.gov or speak with an immigration attorney before calling us. Once citizenship is confirmed, we can get the passport to you fast.

2

Gather Your Documents

We'll send you a detailed checklist based on your application type. Typically you'll need: proof of U.S. citizenship (certified birth certificate or previous passport), a completed DS-11 or DS-82 form, one compliant passport photo, proof of identity (driver's license), and your travel itinerary if you have one.

3

Our Experts Review Everything

Before anything goes to the State Department, our passport specialists review every document in your packet. We catch issues — photo problems, form errors, missing signatures — that cause rejections and delays. This pre-review step alone saves applicants weeks.

4

We Hand-Carry Your Application

A registered Fast Passport Center courier physically walks your application into the State Department passport agency. Unlike mail-in applications that sit in a queue, courier applications are processed immediately because they're verified and complete.

Is This Legitimate? — Yes, Here's Why

Is Fast Passport Center authorized?

Yes. We are an approved and registered U.S. Department of State passport courier. Our registration allows us to hand-carry applications directly to passport agencies — something individuals cannot do on their own.

Will my passport be valid?

Absolutely. Your passport is issued directly by the U.S. Department of State, just like any passport. The only difference is how your application gets there — we hand-deliver it instead of mailing it. The passport itself is the exact same official U.S. passport.

Can I do this myself?

You can submit by mail, which takes 4–6 weeks. You can pay extra for expedited, which takes 2–3 weeks. But you cannot walk into a passport agency and submit an application yourself without an appointment, which can take weeks to get. Registered couriers have priority access — that's the service we provide.

The most common questions U.S. citizens ask about getting a passport through Fast Passport Center.

How fast can I really get a U.S. passport through Fast Passport Center?
In most cases, 2–3 business days. This is the fastest available processing time for U.S. citizens. After we receive your documents, our registered courier hand-delivers your application to the State Department passport agency. Because your application is pre-reviewed and complete, it's processed immediately. Your new passport is then overnighted directly to you.
Is Fast Passport Center a legitimate passport courier?
Yes. Fast Passport Center is an approved and registered U.S. Department of State passport courier. We've been in business for over 20 years, hold an A+ BBB rating, and have helped thousands of U.S. citizens get passports. Our courier registration allows us to hand-deliver applications directly to passport agencies — a privilege not available to individuals.
What documents do I need to get a U.S. passport?
It depends on your situation. For a new passport: certified birth certificate, government photo ID, one passport photo, completed DS-11 form, and the government fee. For a renewal: your most recent passport, one photo, completed DS-82 form, and the fee. Fast Passport Center sends you a personalized checklist after you apply so there's no guesswork.
Can I get a passport without going to a post office or acceptance facility?
For renewals (DS-82), yes — you mail your documents to us directly. For new passports (DS-11), lost/stolen, and child passports, the State Department requires an in-person identity verification at an acceptance facility. However, we guide you through exactly what to do and handle everything after that visit.
Do I need to have urgent travel plans to use a courier?
No. While many clients come to us with imminent travel, anyone can use our service. If you want your passport fast without dealing with the State Department's postal system, we're here for you. No proof of travel is required.
What's the difference between DS-11 and DS-82?
DS-11 is for first-time applicants, lost/stolen/damaged passport replacements, and child passports — it requires an in-person identity verification at an acceptance facility. DS-82 is for renewals by mail — you must have your previous passport, it must be undamaged, issued within the last 15 years, and you must have been at least 16 when it was issued. Not sure which applies? We'll help you figure it out.
How much does it cost to get a passport through Fast Passport Center?
You pay the mandatory government passport fee ($130 for adults, $100 for minors under 16) plus Fast Passport Center's service fee. Our pricing varies by service and speed — visit our passport services page for current rates. The government fee is the same whether you use a courier or mail-in processing.
Can I renew my passport if it's expired?
Yes, if it was issued within the last 15 years, you were at least 16 when it was issued, and it's undamaged — you can renew by mail using DS-82. If your passport expired more than 15 years ago, you'll need to apply using DS-11 as a new application, which requires an in-person identity verification.
What if I need a passport and I wasn't born in the U.S.?
U.S. citizenship can be acquired by birth in the U.S., birth abroad to U.S. citizen parents, or naturalization. All U.S. citizens — regardless of how citizenship was obtained — are eligible for a U.S. passport. If you were born abroad, you'll need your Certificate of Citizenship, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or Naturalization Certificate as proof of citizenship.
Can I track my passport application with Fast Passport Center?
Yes. From the moment we receive your documents, you get tracking updates as your application moves through each stage: document review, courier submission, State Department processing, and overnight shipping to you. No wondering where your passport is — you'll know at every step.
