Frequently Asked

Common Resource Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about passport requirements and the application process.

What is the correct size for a U.S. passport photo?
U.S. passport photos must be exactly 2 inches by 2 inches (51 mm x 51 mm). The head — from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head — must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm). Photos that don't meet these exact measurements are the number one reason for application rejection.
Can I take my own passport photo at home?
Yes, you can take your own passport photo at home if you follow the State Department's strict requirements: plain white background, proper lighting with no shadows, neutral expression, full-face view, and correct dimensions. However, selfies are not accepted. Use a tripod or have someone else take the photo. Many applicants prefer using a professional service to guarantee compliance.
How long is a passport photo valid?
Your passport photo must be taken within the last 6 months and reflect your current appearance. If you've had major facial surgery, significant weight change, or added/removed facial tattoos, you'll need a new photo even if your current one is under 6 months old.
Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?
No. As of November 2016, the U.S. Department of State no longer allows glasses in passport photos. Even if you wear glasses every day, you must remove them for the photo. If you cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, you'll need a signed doctor's statement explaining why.
What should I wear for my passport photo?
Wear everyday clothing that you'd normally wear. Avoid uniforms, camouflage, or clothing that looks like a uniform. Religious attire worn daily is acceptable. The photo should show your full face clearly, so avoid large accessories or hats (unless for religious or medical reasons with supporting documentation).
How long does standard passport processing take?
Standard processing through the U.S. Department of State currently takes 4–6 weeks. Expedited service (at a passport agency) takes 2–3 weeks. Using a registered courier like Fast Passport Center can shorten this to as fast as 2–3 business days for emergency situations.
Do I need a new photo if my appearance has changed?
Yes. If you've undergone significant facial surgery, experienced major weight loss or gain, added or removed large facial tattoos or piercings, or had a gender transition, you need a new photo that reflects your current appearance — even if your existing photo is under 6 months old.
Can I smile in my passport photo?
You should maintain a neutral facial expression with both eyes open and mouth closed. A natural, slight smile is acceptable, but exaggerated expressions, wide smiles, or squinting will cause your photo to be rejected. The goal is to make identification easy for border officials.
