You can get a passport without an appointment in some situations, but not the one most people are hoping for. Adult renewals by mail need no appointment at all. Some courthouses, libraries and clerk offices accept walk-ins for routine applications. A same-day or next-day passport, however, comes only from a regional passport agency, and the State Department requires an appointment there and proof of international travel. If your trip is between 2 days and 4 weeks away and the nearest agency is hours from your home, a registered courier is the practical way to skip the guesswork.
Below, we separate what “walk-in” really means, what each path costs you in time, and how to choose based on your departure date.
TL;DR
- A true walk-in, same-day passport does not exist for most travelers. Regional passport agencies serve urgent travel by appointment only, and those appointments are made by phone.
- Walk-ins at acceptance facilities (some clerk offices and libraries) handle routine applications. They do not speed up processing.
- Travel within 3 days or a family emergency: regional agency. Travel 2 days to 4 weeks out: courier service. Travel 4 or more weeks out: your local post office.
- If you live more than two hours from an agency, such as in Tampa, Charlotte, Sacramento, Nashville or Louisville, a courier removes the long drive and the hunt for an open slot.
- Mistakes on forms cause more delays than anything else, so accuracy matters more than speed of submission.

What “without an appointment” really means
People type this search for three different reasons, and the answer differs for each.
The first group wants to avoid booking a slot at a post office. That is often possible. Post offices generally schedule visits, but libraries, courts and clerk offices set their own rules. The District of Columbia’s public library, for example, runs a passport acceptance office that takes walk-ins only, and the Bexar County District Clerk in Texas lets applicants walk in and fill out the DS-11 form on site. You can find facilities near you with the State Department’s acceptance facility locator, then call to confirm their policy.
The second group wants to skip the facility entirely. If you are renewing an undamaged adult passport, you may be able to renew by mail, with no in-person visit. First-time applicants, children and people replacing a lost or stolen passport generally must apply in person. That may change: the State Department has said that first-time applicants will be able to apply fully online starting in 2027. That is not available today, so it does nothing for a trip you are planning this season.
The third group needs the passport now. This is the group that searches “same day passport no appointment,” and the honest answer is that a walk-in at a local office will not get you a passport in time. Acceptance facilities collect your application and send it on. They do not print passports.

Where each option fits on the calendar
Your departure date decides the route. Here is how the three main paths compare.
| Days until you travel | Best path | Appointment needed? | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days or fewer, or a family emergency | Regional passport agency | Yes, by phone, with proof of travel | Limited slots, possible long drive |
| 2 days to 4 weeks | Courier and expediting service | No agency appointment for you | Service fee on top of government fees |
| 4 weeks or more | USPS post office or other acceptance facility | Often, depending on the facility | Slowest option, mailing time included |
These ranges are the rule of thumb we give customers. They line up with the State Department’s published numbers. Routine processing runs 4 to 6 weeks and expedited processing 2 to 3 weeks, and the department notes that mailing can add up to 2 weeks on each end. Expedited service by mail costs an extra $60, and that fee goes to the government, separate from any service fee.
That mailing time is the trap. A trip 3 weeks away looks safe against a 2 to 3 week expedited estimate, until you add transit both ways.
The regional agency route, and why it is harder than it sounds
Regional passport agencies are the only offices that can issue a passport in days. Urgent appointments are for international travel within 14 calendar days, or when you need a foreign visa within 28 days. Life-or-death emergencies, such as a death or life-threatening injury of an immediate family member abroad, get priority and require documentation like a death certificate or a letter from a medical professional.
There is no walk-in line at these agencies. You book through the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. The State Department lists urgent-travel help by phone, and a published phone guide puts the hours at Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, with shorter weekend hours. Hold times can be long, and slots are scarce. If the only opening is in a different city or state, you drive or fly there.
If you need an appointment, arrive with everything: your proof of travel, completed forms, photo, identification, citizenship evidence and payment. Showing up with a gap usually ends the visit with no passport and no second chance that week. For a deeper look at how that timeline unfolds, read our guide to how a regional passport agency works.
For a true emergency inside 3 days, this is the right route, and we will say so plainly. For anyone with more runway, it is often the wrong one.
Why the 2-day to 4-week window favors a courier
Most people who search for a passport without an appointment are not 48 hours from departure. They are 10 days out, or three weeks out, and just discovered an expired passport. That window is where a registered courier earns its fee.
A courier works with the agency on your behalf. Instead of you finding a slot and driving across state lines, an agent prepares your application, reviews every document, and hand-delivers the package to the passport agency. You skip the phone queue and the agency visit. Our full explanation of this timeline is in our guide on how couriers help travelers 2 to 28 days out.
This matters most if you live far from an agency. Travelers in Tampa, Charlotte, Sacramento, Nashville and Louisville face a drive of two hours or more, plus the chance that no slot exists on a day they can make. A courier turns that into a drop-off or a secure shipment. We also have a page for people stuck when agencies are hours away.
What you do not have to do
When you use a courier, you do not have to call the agency line and wait on hold, travel to a distant city with a folder of papers, or figure out on your own which form applies. You still supply the documents, and the government fees are paid separately from our service fee. What changes is who handles the hand-off and who checks your file before it reaches an examiner.
Common situations and the right next step
Your passport expired and you just noticed. First check the date. Many countries also require several months of validity beyond your return date, so a passport that looks fine may not be. If you are inside 4 weeks of departure, start now. Our guide to renewing before an international trip covers the checks, and if time is very tight, see renewal help when time is tight.
You lost your passport or it was stolen. A replacement generally requires an in-person application, so a mail-in renewal is not an option. Report the loss, then choose your path by departure date. A courier can handle the application for urgent timelines. Our emergency passport service is built for this case.
Your child needs a first passport. Children’s applications have extra requirements, including parental consent rules, and mistakes are common. Our rush child passport guide walks through what parents need, and you can start on the child passport page.
You are renewing early. Wondering whether you can renew before expiration? Yes, and we explain when in can you renew a passport early.
You are already abroad. The process is different from the one in the U.S., and we cover it in renewing a passport while traveling abroad.
Our perspective: accuracy is the real accelerator
We are a U.S. Department of State registered passport courier with more than 20 years of experience and drop-off offices in 24 cities. In that time, one pattern has not changed. People search for a way around the appointment, expecting a shortcut, and the thing that actually costs them days is a small error: a photo that does not meet the requirements, a missing page of evidence, the wrong form for the situation.
A rushed application with a mistake is slower than a careful one without. That is why our agents review each file before it travels, and why we tell customers to check their passport expiration date the day they book a trip, not the week before.
We also tell people when they do not need us. If your trip is 4 or more weeks away, a post office is a sound, lower-cost choice. If you are inside 3 days or facing a family emergency, call the National Passport Information Center and aim for an agency. Between those two, in the 2-day to 4-week range, a courier takes the pressure off, especially if the nearest agency is a long drive away.

Plan ahead so you are never in this spot again
The best fix for last-minute passport stress is a calendar habit. Look up expiration dates for every family member twice a year. Many countries require validity beyond your travel dates, and renewal timelines run longer in spring and summer. Other travel paperwork has the same problem: if you or a family member also needs to extend a residence permit abroad, a Spanish student visa renewal walkthrough shows how much earlier the planning has to start than most people expect.
Keep a digital copy of your passport’s photo page and a note of where originals live. If you travel often, consider whether a second passport or a passport card fits your habits, and whether passport protection is worth adding.
Start your expedited application
If your departure is within 4 weeks and you want an agent on your file from the first step, we handle the details: form assistance, document review, hand-delivery to the passport agency, and real-time order tracking. Choose the service that matches your situation on our passport services page, or start a passport renewal or a new passport directly. Government fees are paid separately from our service fee.
A short checklist before you decide
Before you commit to any route, answer four questions. When exactly do you leave, and when do you need the passport in hand, not just when you hope it arrives? Does your destination require extra validity or a visa? Can you reach a regional agency within a reasonable drive, and is there a real slot, not just a hope of one? Is your file complete, with citizenship evidence, identification, a compliant photo and the correct form?
If the answer to the third question is no, or the fourth is uncertain, you have your answer. Get a second set of eyes on the application and use a courier for the hand-off. If you want a plain-language look at the full method, see our explainer on how to expedite passport processing.
FAQ
Can I just walk into a post office to get a passport?
Sometimes, depending on the location, but many post offices book visits through a scheduler. Even if they take you, the office only accepts and forwards your application. It does not issue the passport, so a walk-in will not meet an urgent deadline.
Is there a same-day passport with no appointment?
No. Same-day or next-day service is limited to regional passport agencies, and they require an appointment plus proof of international travel. If your trip is further out than 14 days, the State Department generally points you to expedited processing instead, and a courier can handle that for you.
How do I get a regional agency appointment?
Call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. Urgent appointments cannot be booked online. Expect a wait on the line, and have your travel details ready, since you will need to show proof of travel.
Do I need an appointment to renew my passport?
Most adults renewing an undamaged passport can do so by mail without any appointment. Lost, stolen or damaged passports, and children’s passports, usually require an in-person application instead. If your timeline is tight, a courier can speed up either case.
Will I be able to apply for my first passport online?
The State Department has announced that first-time applicants will be able to apply online starting in 2027. That is not available yet, so for any trip this year, plan on the in-person process or a courier.
