Passport Processing Times

Current State Department timelines, expedited options, and exactly how long each processing track takes — so you know when to apply for your travel dates.

Side-by-Side Comparison

All Processing Tracks Compared

Current State Department timelines as of 2026. Times can shift during peak seasons — always apply earlier than you think you need to.

6–8 Weeks

Routine

The standard State Department track for applicants who are not traveling soon. This is the lowest-cost government option but offers no guaranteed timeline — delays are common, especially during peak travel seasons (spring and summer).

Best for

Non-urgent travel 2+ months away

Fees

$130 adult / $100 minor

  • No travel documentation required
  • Processed at a Regional Passport Agency or facility
  • Actual times vary — often longer during peak season
  • No in-person appointment needed
3–5 Weeks

Expedited

Pay an additional $60 to the State Department to move your application to the front of the routine queue. During peak summer season, this can stretch toward 5 weeks. Still mail-in; still no guaranteed date.

Best for

Travel 5–8 weeks away

Fees

$130 + $60 expedite fee

  • +$60 government expedite fee required
  • Passport is returned by 1–2 day delivery
  • Add $19.53 for return shipping
  • Still does not guarantee a specific date
24–72 Hours

Life-or-Death Emergency

For genuine life-or-death situations (your own or immediate family member). Requires proof of emergency such as a death certificate, hospital letter, or medical documentation. In-person appointment at a Regional Passport Agency required.

Best for

Life-or-death emergencies only

Fees

$130 + $60 expedite fee

  • Must have proof of life-or-death emergency
  • In-person appointment at passport agency
  • Appointment availability is very limited
  • Not available for ordinary urgent travel

2–3 Business Days

Courier Service

The fastest reliable option for most travelers. Fast Passport Center hand-delivers your application directly to the State Department passport agency. Because your file is complete and pre-reviewed, it's processed in priority. Your passport is then overnighted to you.

Best for

Urgent travel within 2–14 days

Fees

$130 + $60 expedite fee + service fee

  • Application hand-delivered to passport agency
  • Pre-review ensures no errors or rejections
  • Overnight delivery of your new passport
  • Track every step with real-time updates

Passport Times Are Estimates — Not Guarantees

The State Department's published timelines are estimates only. During peak seasons (April–August) and around holidays, times often extend by weeks. If your travel is within 6 weeks, do not rely on routine processing. Use expedited mail-in at minimum — or a courier service if time is critical.

Courier Service Only

Routine and expedited mail-in are not viable. Only a registered passport courier or a direct appointment at a Regional Passport Agency can get your passport in time. Call Fast Passport Center immediately.

Courier Service

Courier service is your best bet. Expedited mail-in technically claims 3–5 weeks but that clock starts when the agency receives your documents — not when you mail them. During peak summer, that can stretch toward 5 weeks. Too risky at this lead time.

Expedited or Courier

Expedited mail-in may work, but we strongly recommend a courier if you cannot afford any risk. 3 weeks during peak season can easily stretch to 4–5 weeks with the State Department.

Expedited Mail-In

Expedited processing gives you a comfortable buffer. Apply now — don't wait. Processing times can creep up during spring and summer even for expedited applications.

Routine processing should work, but expedited is always worth the $60 extra for peace of mind. Applying earlier than needed is always the right move.

Things Most People Don't Factor In

Peak Season Warning

March through August is the busiest period for passport applications. State Department times often double during this period. Apply in fall or winter when possible.

Cruises Have Earlier Deadlines

Most cruise lines require your passport to be valid 6 months beyond the cruise end date. Factor this in — if your passport expires in 8 months and the cruise is 6 weeks away, you need to renew first.

Some Countries Need 6 Extra Months

Many countries refuse entry if your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date. Even if your passport is ‘valid’, some destinations will turn you away at the airport.

Mailing Time Is Not Included

State Department processing time clocks start when they receive your application — not when you mail it. Add 2–5 business days for outgoing and return shipping when planning.
